Mike Miller, Professor of Psychological & Brain Sciences, is one of two UCSB professors nominated by Chancellor Henry Yang to participate in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) sponsored Defense Science Study Group (DSSG). The DSSG is a program of education and study that introduces outstanding science and engineering professors to the United States’ security challenges and encourages them to apply their talents to these issues. The program, begun in 1986, is directed by the non-profit Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA).
Professor Miller was chosen to represent the campus in this year's nominations because of his expertise in the neural basis of memory and decision making and his experience with a wide variety of cognitive neuroscience theories and techniques. In 2008 the National Research Council explicitly recognized that better understanding in several areas of cognitive neuroscience research are essential for U.S. national security in the context of the war on terrorism.
