ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
TFI is a new organization that creates disruptive intellectual and scientific communities in order to foster radical progress in academic disciplines, sociopolitical systems and technological industries. This unique institute, created in partnership with the Max Planck Society and housed in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara, is a research facility at which junior and senior scholars congregate to critically assess the most fundamental ideas in academia and society at large.
TFI’s community includes:
• junior and senior scholars in residency
• a public, external board with preeminent international scholars and scientific writers
• an internal, executive board with leaders from the host institutions
Through its residencies and events, TFI solicits proposals that address the status quo, foundational weaknesses, foundational alternatives and a novel research question, all with the goal of disrupting a commonly accepted, but seldom challenged, scientific viewpoint. Event types include symposia and workshops and bootcamps, at which senior scholars share promising heterodox approaches with junior scholars.
Develop, communicate and foster TFI’s strategic vision; curate, organize and host international scientific meetings, including those described above; lead efforts to disseminate meeting outcomes as peer-reviewed publications and/or popular science features; partner with UCSB and MPS to raise funds from federal agencies, private foundations, and private philanthropists; and serve as the inaugural chief operating officer of TFI, overseeing its financial, facilities, and human resource activities, all in close collaboration with TFI’s steering committees and boards.
