An Explanation of the Computer Knowledge Quiz |

The
test included 40 items in a variety of formats (matching, fill-in, multiple
choice, true/false) that covered several different areas of computer-related
knowledge. The test employed photographs and diagrams, and included sections
on computers and peripherals, mouse functions, diskette characteristics
and handling, game-playing, and word-processing.
Children were tested individually and each session took 10-20 minutes. The test was used in a pre-test post-test (test-retest) design, with control for repeated test administration. As each new child over the course of the year enrolled in the Fifth Dimension, we alternatively assigned them into the Pre-and-Post-Test or the Post-Test-Only groups. The Pre-Post children were asked to take the Official Fifth Dimension Computer Quiz, and the Post-Test-Only children were simply registered into the study. We then kept track of their attendance and as soon as they had visited the club close to 14 times, we tried to catch up with them for the post-test. This was a bit tricky, as we could never predict exactly when they would show up. Our research assistant visited the club every session, hoping to catch the Post-Test subjects when they were present at the club, and in a mood to take the test. As you can imagine, this resulted in some variability in the number of visits that Post-Test children had actually accumulated by the time we caught up with them. Therefore, the range in number of visits was 8-25, with the average number of 5th Dimension visits for the Post Test subjects being 15.0, which did not vary by the Pre-Post and Post-Test-Only conditions.
