Everything's confirmed,
folks. We'll meet at Devereux Hall, right where we had planned, at
7p tonight.
As explained in class, Storke Road intersects with El Colegio and Lagoon
Road at the traffic light by Francisco Torres. Take Lagoon Road towards
the ocean (away from the mountains). Follow it for about a mile.
You'll head up a hill, and they'll be a driveway to the left, right before
the road narrows from a paved two lane street to an unpaved one-lane one.
Take the driveway to the left, and park.
I'll have my cell phone on if you need to reach me, 886-0007
See you at 7!
Remember that the Life History papers, described at http://www.psych.ucsb.edu/~kopeikin/lhistory.htm
were
due 5/29/02.
Previous Announcements
-
All Psych Honors students should complete the pre-major requirements ASAP.
-
That means taking Psych 1, 5, 7, calculus, and two science courses.
-
You need to do this before you'll be allowed in Psych courses numbered
over 109.
-
There's no reason you can't do this by the end of you Freshman year, and
you should.
-
Psych Honor Students have priority in the RBT system.
-
You should get into Psychology courses if you try to register on your first
pass, as soon as you're allowed
-
If you can't get into a psych class that way, I don't understand why.
Be sure to let me know if that happens.
-
Don't expect to waltz into Psych classes without using RBT!
-
Our Dept. is very popular and we're struggling to accomodate the large
numbr of students who want to take our GE classes.
-
We grant Honor Students priority via the RBT system. Use it!
-
Honors Units for Psych 1, 5, & 7
-
You'll automatically get L&S Honors Units for Psych 1, 5, & 7 provided
you take 90a, 90b, & 90c concurrently
-
If you don't meet those requirements, talk with me
-
The Psychology Dept. has instituted an online waiting list system
-
It will probably become the main route into busy Psych classes, following
RBT
-
Be sure to note that you are part of the PSYCHOLOGY Honors Program in the
comment field

Read about the Honors Programs in Psychology and the College of Letteres
and Sciences. Follow the two links, and bring any questions to class
Wednesday.

If you haven't signed up for the Psychology Listerves, you should!
Do so at http://mentor.lscf.ucsb.edu/list/list.html
"Electronic
mail announcement lists have been established to provide for an effective
way in which
departments communicate with their undergraduate majors. If you are a major
in any of these
departments, you may consider subscribing: Ecology, Evolution and Marine
Biology; Molecular,
Cellular and Developmental Biology; Psychology. The departments strongly
encourage their students
to subscribe to these lists as information concerning special opportunities,
course offerings,
advancement deadlines, and so forth, will be posted to them. Messages sent
to these lists are
archived and made accessible to our students. You may subscribe to the
mailing lists for multiple majors.
-
Some not-so subtle reminders about minimum expectations:
-
Be on time for class.
-
Stopping the class to unlock doors for later arrivals
is disruptive. Honors students who expect "excellent" evaluations
should contribute to class, not disrupt it.
-
Attendance is mandatory.
-
To get full credit for participation (which strongly influences grades),
come every time, on time, and be prepared.
-
don't miss class if you can possibly avoid it.
-
If you must miss, even once, attend my office hours during the following
week.
-
We will arrange a make-up assignment. It will generally be a 5 page
paper (upon reflection, that seems more reasonable than 10 pages)
-
Students who miss a meeting or arrive late are still responsible to completing
all assignments and obtaining any information that was conveyed.
-
Talk to classmates to be sure you are prepared for the next class meeting.
"I missed last week" is not an excuse for failing to complete an upcoming
assignment.
-
Check your email and the class webpage regularly.
Do so every Monday at very least, and more regularly when possible.
-
If I need to reach you before class, I'll be expecting you to check on
Monday, so be sure you do
-
Take a look at our class's questions about Psychology and interests, summarized
here.
-
Do you see any interest patterns or general topics that seem especially
fascinating to our group? What does this mean?
-
Prepare to discuss these ratings, what they signify, and how they can be
used
-
Before class on Wed 2/11, carefully read this recent USA Today article
on a college suicide. We'll be discussing
it in detail.
