Rock climbing has always been a favorite lab activity. And although there are usually people in the lab who don't climb, there are almost always some who do. California is a climber's dream. There are several lifetimes of rock to climb within a half day's drive of UCSB. Santa Barbara alone has its own thick guide book, and not far away are Joshua Tree, Red Rocks, Tahquitz/Suicide, Owen's Gorge, the Needles, Yosemite ... The list goes on and on.
