Prospective Students
Prospective Freshman If you are interested in applying as a freshman, you should visit the Admissions web site for information on admission requirements, application procedures, campus visits and more. The department is not responsible for decisions regarding admission. While in high school, you can begin preparing for the psychology major by taking AP courses in psychology, statistics and calculus. Please contact the undergraduate advisor with any questions regarding the major. Transfer Students If you are planning to transfer to UCSB as a Psychology major from a community college, the following information may assist you in planning your schedule. The Psychology major at UCSB has a pre-major requirement which consists of the following four courses:
If you are planning to transfer to UCSB as a Biopsychology major from a community college, the following information may assist you in planning your schedule. The Biopsychology major at UCSB has a pre-major requirement which consists of the following courses:
The following science courses are also required for preparation for the Biopsychology major:
In order to be on track and to finish your degree in a timely manner at UCSB, transfer students should try to complete general chemistry before transferring. Students attending community colleges can check www.assist.org for information about the transferability of specific courses. Contact the undergraduate advisor with any additional questions. What follows are general guidelines for choosing courses that will transfer to the pre-major: Psychology 1- Introduction to Psychology Most introductory Psychology courses will transfer as equivalent to Psychology 1. If your community college or university splits this course into two semesters or quarters, contact the undergraduate advisor for an evaluation of the course. Psychology 3-The Biological Basis of Psychology This course is an introduction to biopsychology and may be called physiological psychology, biological psychology or brain and behavior. Psychology 5 - Introductory Statistics This may either be an introductory statistics course offered through your school's mathematics department, or a course offered through the psychology department. It should contain the following elements: Probability, frequency distributions, descriptive statistics, sampling distributions of the mean and variance, basic logic of inference, hypothesis testing for one sample, related samples, and independent samples, correlation and regression, simple non-parametric tests. Psychology 7 - Introduction to Experimental Psychology Not all community colleges will offer this course. If it is offered, it is often called "Research Methods" or something similar. It should include an introduction to the planning and execution of experiments in psychology and to the analysis and interpretation of data. Math 34A - Calculus for the Social and Life Sciences This requirement can be fulfilled by the completion of one quarter or semester of calculus. Pre-calculus will not satisfy this requirement. The GPA Requirement Pre-Major courses must be completed with a 2.75 GPA or better in order to be admitted to full major status. For students who are transferring from a community college, you should be aware that your grades will not transfer to UCSB. This means that if you have requirements in the pre-major that are not complete at the time of matriculation, your pre-major GPA will be based only on the grades received in courses taken at UCSB or at another UC during a regular or summer session. For example, if you take all the pre-major courses at your community college except calculus and psychology 7, you will need to achieve a 2.75 GPA in those two courses while in attendance here. If possible, complete the pre-major at your community college. Transfer students are at a disadvantage when they transfer only part of the pre-major requirements. If you complete all the pre-major courses at your community college prior to transfer, you will be required to earn a 2.0 or higher grade-point average in at least two psychology courses numbered 100-109 before being admitted to full major standing.
