Undergraduate Studies: Biopsychology Major

Admission

Admission to the full Biopsychology major is contingent upon fulfilling the following major requirements:

  1. At least a 2.75 University of California (UC) grade-point average (GPA) in Area I, with no grade lower than C-
  2. Not more than one C- in Area I
  3. At least a 2.0 UC GPA in Area II
  4. No P/NP grades in area I and II
  5. Completion of Area I and petitioning for full major status prior to completion of 144 units

Note: Transfer students who have completed the entire pre-major prior to transfer must earn a 2.0 or higher UC GPA in at least two upper division psychology courses numbered 100-109 before they can be admitted to the full major.

Area I: Pre-Major

Psychology 1 4 units
Psychology 3 3 units
Psychology 5 or PSTAT 5 5 units
Psychology 7 3 units
Mathematics 34A

4 units


Area II: Preparation for the Major

MCDB 1A-AL, MCDB 1B, EEMB 2, and either MCDB 1BL or EEMB 2L 11 units
Chemistry 1A-AL, 1B-BL, 1C-1CL (or Chemistry 2 series) and 6A-B and 109A-B 24 units
Physics 6A-AL-B-BL-C-CL 12 units
Mathematics 34B 4 units

 

Upper-Division Major

44-46 UD units are required, distributed as follows:

  1. Psychology 111 (offered only in fall quarter)
  2. Two from the following laboratory courses: Psychology 110L, 111L, 116L, 137L, 168L, 169L,or MCBD 126AL (Note: concurrent enrollment in MCDB 126A is a prerequisite to MCBD 126AL)
  3. Five courses from the following: Psychology 110A or 110B or 110C, 113, 115, 116, 122, 123, 125, 132, 133, 134, 137, 163AA-ZZ, 166, 167, 168, 170, 177 (Note: only one course form 110A-B-C will apply to this area)
  4. 12 units of UD Psychology electives

Note: No more than 12 total units of major credit allowed for Psychology 197ABC, 198 and 199.

P/NP Grading Option: Up to 8 units of the following courses may be taken P/NP for major credit: Psychology 135ABC, 142P, 143P, 198, 199. All other major courses (Prep or UD), including courses applied to the major from other departments, must be taken on a letter-grade basis.

Substitutions: In the major requirements permissible only by petition to the department chair.

Residence Requirements: At least 20 UD units in major while in residence at UCSB.

GPA Requirements: At least 2.0 overall average in: a) all UD major courses; and b)all major courses (Prep and UD) while in UC.

Double Majors: With the approval of each department chairperson, up to a total of 8 units may be applied simultaneously to both UD majors.
