Undergraduate Studies: Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Registration and Waiting Lists

How do I crash a Psych class?

Unlike most other departments, the waiting lists for most Psychology courses are not handled by the professors. Instead they are available online: go to www.psych.ucsb.edu and click on "undergraduate waiting list sign up page." Please do not email the instructors. They will just direct you back to the web site. Waiting lists are available as of the first day of the first pass. Don't forget to watch GOLD-if space opens up and you have a pass time, you should grab it on your own. The waiting lists close at the end of the fifth day of instruction. There will not be a waiting list for a class if the course you are interested in is not on the waiting list sign up form.

Do you give the add codes out on a first-come-first-serve basis?

No, we do not. First, we check pre-requisites. Then, we check your major status (pre-major or full major). The instructor will determine the order in which students who meet the prerequisites are added. Adding your name to the waiting list does not guarantee you a spot in the course.

Do I need to check back later to see if I'm still on the list?

No, please don't. The only reason you would be off the list is if you didn't meet the pre-requisites for the course.

How can I find out where I am (chronologically) on the list?

You really can't. Since we don't make assignments first come first serve, it doesn't really matter. What matters is how close you are to graduation compared to the other people on the list. To know that, we need to wait for the lists to close.

When and how will I find out if I got into the class?

Instructors or TA's for each course will distribute the approval codes at the beginning of the quarter. You must attend the first day of class or your name will be removed from the waiting list. For certain courses, such as Psy 7, decisions will be made prior to the quarter beginning and emails will be sent to students to direct them to pick up add codes. Be sure to check your email often.

What if I'm finishing pre-major work this quarter—will I be able to get into upper division courses?

You can fill out the petition for full-major status now, and we will process it when the quarter grades come in. We still recommend that you add your name to the waiting list(s), however, in case the paperwork doesn't go through before your last pass.
