When can I declare pre-psychology or pre-biopsychology?

You can declare either pre-major after you complete PSY 1 with a C or better. If you transferred Psy 1 or have AP psychology credit, you can declare the pre-major by bringing your unofficial transcript and New Student Profile to the Psychology Undergraduate office (Psychology East, Room 1814).

Can I take upper division psychology courses even though I am still a pre-major?

Yes. Psychology 100-109 courses are open to all majors. Psychology majors are required to take four of these courses. Biopsychology majors need 12 units of electives. Psychology 100-109 courses count toward these electives.

Will grades from my community college count toward the pre-psychology major GPA?

No. Grade points from other institutions (except summer school work at other University of California
campuses) do not transfer. You receive units and subject credit only.

Will the Abnormal Psychology or Developmental Psychology course I took at my community college count toward the psychology major?

No. All courses taken at a community college are lower division courses. The abnormal and developmental psychology courses at UCSB are upper division courses.

Do I have to complete the four courses numbered 100-109 before taking the psychology courses numbered 110 and above?

No. You can begin taking the courses numbered 110 and above as soon as you complete the pre-major.

When and how do I become a full Psychology or biopsychology major?

After you complete the pre-major requirements with the 2.75 GPA, you must complete a Change of Major Petition in the Psychology Undergraduate office (Psychology East, Room 1814). You will not be automatically switched to a full major. You may complete the Change of Major Petition during the quarter in which you are enrolled in the last pre-major course. The petition will be processed and the major changed upon receipt of final grades.

What should I enroll in if I’m not in the full major and have completed all general education requirements?

Take courses from other disciplines. You are required to complete 60 upper division units which you will not meet with your major requirements.

Can I register for Psychology courses numbered 110 and above if I am in the last pre-major course this quarter?

No. Psychology courses numbered 110 and above require full major status. The department does not allow concurrent enrollment in the last pre-major course and 110 and above psychology courses. You will not be able to register for the courses numbered 110 and above until you complete the pre-major requirements and meet the 2.75 minimum GPA.

How will I get the courses numbered 110 and above next quarter?

You should complete the Change of Major Petition during the quarter in which you are enrolled in the last pre-major class. You should also add your name to the electronic waiting list for the courses you hope to crash. Do not wait to register until you are a full major or you will be charged a late registration fee. Attend the course on the first day and request an add code. Sometimes your major will be changed at the beginning of third pass, and you will then be able to add the classes on GOLD.

What if I do not meet the pre-major GPA?

If you are a pre-psychology or pre-biopsychology major and do not meet the 2.75 minimum GPA requirement, you can repeat any course in which you received a C- or lower. Keep in mind that you must declare full psychology by the time you complete 144 units, so you must plan carefully. If you do not have any C-s, you should schedule an appointment with the undergraduate advisor to discuss your options.
