Joining the Lab

If you are reading this page it means that you might be interested in joining the Vision & Image Understanding laboratory either as a graduate student, a post-doc or a visiting scholar. A few words about this. We are a productive/interdisciplinary lab (with psychologists, engineers, mathematicians and physicists as members) interested in important questions in cognition and perception. The lab has a particular emphasis on computational approaches to behavior and its relation to neural physiological measures. We are interested in creating computational models to understand how the brain works and also to optimize how humans perform perceptual tasks (e.g., doctors finding a tumor in a medical images). We have on-going collaborations with NASA Ames Vision Group at Moffett Field, CA and the Department of Medical Physics and Imaging at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. Send us an email for any further information.

Current Positions

The Vision & Image Understanding laboratory (Eckstein lab) in the Department of Psychology, University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a position as a post-doctoral researcher in computational modeling of eye movements and attention during visual search. The position is for one year (renewable for up to 3 years). The post-doctoral researcher will also have the opportunity to participate in other ongoing lab projects related to medical image perception, theoretical neuroscience and cognitive neuroscience as well as a variety of activities at UCSB’s Sage Center for the Study of the Mind (http://www.sagecenter.ucsb.edu/).

Requirements: The successful candidate should have a strong technical background and a Ph.D. in any of the following: Vision Science, Perceptual Psychology, Computer Science, Engineering, Physics or related fields. Experience with computational modeling and visual psychophysics as well as proficiency with programming in Matlab required. Experience with video-based eye tracking technology preferred. The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research and service.
