If you are reading this page it means that you might be interested in joining the Vision & Image Understanding laboratory either as a graduate student, a post-doc or a visiting scholar. A few words about this. We are a productive/interdisciplinary lab (with psychologists, neuroscientists, engineers, mathematicians and physicists as members) interested in important questions in cognition and perception. The lab has a particular emphasis on computational approaches to behavior and its relation to neural physiological measures. We are interested in creating computational models to understand how the brain works and also to optimize how humans perform perceptual tasks.
Postdoctoral position: Computational Vision/Human and Machine assisted Group Decisions
The Vision & Image Understanding Laboratory (Eckstein lab) in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a position as a post-doctoral researcher in computational modeling of visual search, eye movements, human group and machine-assisted search decisions. This is an initial one year position with the possibility for renewal annually. The post-doctoral researcher will also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of ongoing neuroscience and cognitive neuroscience activities sponsored by the Sage Center for the Study of the Mind (http://www.sagecenter.ucsb.edu/). Requirements: The successful candidate should have a strong technical background and a Ph.D. in any of the following: Vision Science, Perceptual Psychology, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field. Excellent programming skills required. Expertise in one or more of these three areas highly desirable: Visual psychophysics, computational modeling, machine learning and optimization techniques. Candidate should be a US Citizen. The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service.
Postdoctoral position: Computational Cognitive Neuroscience
The Vision & Image Understanding Laboratory (Eckstein lab) & the Attention Laboratory (Giesbrecht Lab) in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a position as a post-doctoral researcher in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of perception, attention, learning and decision making. The successful candidate will participate in projects at the in-house Brain Imaging Center (http://www.bic.ucsb.edu/index.htm) and Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies (ICB, http://www.icb.ucsb.edu/) integrating computational modeling and psychophysics with computational approaches to neuroimaging. This is an intial one year position with the possibility for renewable annually. The post-doctoral researcher will also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of ongoing neuroscience and cognitive neuroscience activities sponsored by the Sage Center for the Study of the Mind (http://www.sagecenter.ucsb.edu/) and the bi-annual UC Davis/UCSB Summer Institute in Cognitive Neuroscience held at UC Santa Barbara (http://sicn.cmb.ucdavis.edu/about/2011-summer-institute).
Requirements: The successful candidate should have a strong technical background and a Ph.D. in any of the following: Neuroscience, Cognitive Neuroscience, Vision Science, Perceptual Psychology, or related fields. Training and experience with vision-based fMRI techniques and programming (e.g., MatLab), training and research experience in visual psychophysics and computational modeling preferable.
The department is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service.
