Welcome

Emotions are an integral aspect of our membership in social groups. We are thrilled when our national team wins the World Cup against stiff competition, and angry when protesters in another country burn our flag. Such group-based emotions don’t just arise from intergroup interactions, but also cause them. The joy of an ingroup victory makes us want to celebrate with other group members, whereas the anger provoked by an insult directed at our group makes us want to retaliate against the offenders. In the Social Emotions Laboratory at UCSB, we study the antecedents and consequences of such group-based emotions and their implications for all aspects of intergroup relations.
