Welcome to the UCSB Cognition and Development Laboratory.

Our main research focus is to understand the nature, origin, development and brain basis of human social interaction. Within this broad goal we study several different aspects of social cognition using a multi-method approach, combining the techniques of cognitive psychology, developmental neuro-psychology, brain imaging, cross cultural psychology, and lifespan perspectives.

One key topic we study is ‘theory of mind’. This capacity allows us to understand the actions, reactions and interactions of other people in terms of their underlying beliefs and desires.

Another topic concerns how social information is incorporated with non-social information to arrive at an understanding of everyday objects and their functions.
