Roy Baumeister
Visiting Professor

Roy F. Baumeister is spending the 2009-2010 year here, on sabbatical from Florida State University. He received his PhD in 1978 from Princeton in social psychology and since then has dabbled in research, producing over 400 publications on various topics. His projects for this year include writing an Annual Review of Psychology chapter on consciousness and behavior, finishing his book Is There Anything Good About Men? (Oxford University Press), editing a textbook for graduate study in social psychology, and possibly starting a book on either self-control or the meaning of life. He seeks to expand and inform his research program, which is currently focused on issues of action control, especially self-regulation, decision making, and initiative, from which he hopes to produce a new and scientific theory of free will. His other research interests include emotion, illusions of learning, belongingness and rejection, consciousness and goal pursuit, sexuality, aggression, and power. He came here partly seeking intellectual stimulation from the wonderful faculty and graduate students, because he likes to talk about big ideas such as how culture works, the power of social reality, what is meaning, and why people do stupid things. He is also hoping to do a bit of windsurfing and maybe learn to kitesurf. Jim Blascovich is his sponsor.
