Shivakumar Viswanathan is a postdoctoral researcher working with Scott T. Grafton. His research seeks to understand the brain's ability to flexibly integrate diverse information to solve action problems. His current focus is on how visual and proprioceptive information are bound together during the mental simulation of hand action. A parallel focus is developing methods for the measurement of task-selective brain activity using FMRI, using pattern-classification algorithms and Repetition Suppression. Shivakumar has an MS in engineering management (with a focus on computer-aided design) from the Missouri University of Science and Technology; he completed his PhD in computer science (with an artificial intelligence focus) with Jordan Pollack at Brandeis University; and subsequently trained as a postdoc studying visual memory with Robert Sekuler at Brandeis University, before moving to UCSB to train with Scott Grafton.
