llona Obara is a doctoral student at the Institute of Pharmacology Polish Academy of Sciences in Krakow, Poland. In February 2007 she will finish her Ph.D. in the Department of Pain Pharmacology under the supervision of Professor Barbara Przewlocka. Her research interests include the investigation of the role of opioids (both peptide and non-peptide) in different models of inflammatory and neuropathic pain in rats. In her Ph.D. thesis she has demonstrated that opioid antinociception can be produced by localized peripheral administration of opioid analgesics (independent of any central actions of the drugs). She has also tried to explain the mechanisms underlying lower analgesic effectiveness of opioids in chronic pain. Ms. Obara is currently training in Professor Aaron Ettenberg’s laboratory where she is involved in studies on the neurobiology of reinforcement and the motivational mechanisms underlying drug abuse.
