Dr. Ben-Shahar completed her graduate work in the Neuroscience and Behavior program at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she earned her doctorate under Dr. Aaron Ettenberg’s supervision in the spring of 1997. Upon graduation, she secured an outstanding post-doctoral position at the Scripps Research Foundation in San Diego. Since 1998, she has been serving as Dr. Ettenberg's Co-Investigator on a research project funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse grant (DA05041) on the neural mechanisms underlying stimulant abuse. Dr. Ben-Shahar’s work involves an examination of the differences in CNS function that occur in animals as they move from acute short-term exposure to cocaine to more chronic daily exposure. This work has considerable relevance to our understanding of what changes in the brain as an individual drug user moves from the characteristically stable pattern of drug use seen in the occasional recreational user to the escalating compulsive use of the addict. Dr. Ben-Shahar also has been a lecturer in the Department of Psychology since 1993. Contact Information
