Karen K. Szumlinski earned a BSc in Psychology and a MSc in Medical Sciences (Neuroscience and Behavioural Sciences Division) at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Szumlinski earned a second MS and her PhD (2000) in the Center for Neuroscience and Neuropharmacology at the Albany Medical College in Albany, New York, USA. While conducting her pre-doctoral studies, Dr. Szumlinski earned an American Women in Science Citation of Merit, an Early Investigator Award from the College on Problems of Drug Dependence, as well as the Dean’s Certificate for Excellence in Teaching and the Leonard Procita Prize for Excellence in Research from the Albany Medical College. Dr. Szumlinski conducted her post-doctoral training in the Department of Physiology and Neuroscience at the Medical University of South Carolina. During her postdoctoral training, Dr. Szumlinski was awarded the prestigious Young Investigator Award from the European Behavioural Pharmacology Society, the Postdoctoral Outstanding Young Investigator Award from the International Behavioural and Neural Genetics Society and more recently, the Bristol-Meyers Squibb Award from the American College on Neuropsychopharmacology. In December 2003, Dr. Szumlinski was promoted to Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Physiology and Neuroscience at the Medical University of South Carolina and in July 2004 was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychological & Brain sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
