Current Research: Jack M. Loomis

Jack Loomis received a BA in Psychology from Johns Hopkins University in 1967 and a Ph. D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Michigan in 1971. Since 1974 he has been on the Psychology faculty at UCSB. His primary research areas are perception and spatial cognition. His research in perception has been unusually broad, covering the spatial senses of vision, hearing, and touch. Within visual perception, he has done research on a variety of topics, including visual space perception, visual control of action, color vision, and shape from motion. He and his former student, Andy Beall, introduced virtual reality as a research tool at UCSB and later, joined by Jim Blascovich, promoted its use in perception, spatial cognition, and social psychology. Andy then went on to found WorldViz, one of the premier virtual reality companies in the world. In 1985, Jack invented a GPS-based navigation system for blind people and directed a research project on this topic for over 20 years (along with Reginald Golledge and Roberta Klatzky). He is the author of over 140 publications. He retired from teaching in 2009 and continues an active program of research as Research Professor.
