May 3, 2011: Dr. Michael Gazzaniga, has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Members are elected "in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research." Michael Gazzaniga's research program investigates how the brain enables the mind. Over the course of several decades, a major focus of his research has been an extensive study of patients who have undergone split-brain surgery that have revealed lateralization of functions across the cerebral hemispheres. He is Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences and Director for the SAGE Center for the Study of Mind at the University of California Santa Barbara.
