Using Scantron for Scoring Objective Tests

Before the Exam

  • Show students the Scantron form they will need (Ex the green 882-ES). Students should provide their own.
  • Get a master key from the professor for all versions of the exam (ex Exam A, Exam B), double check all answers, and discuss any discrepancies BEFORE you score the exam.
  • DO NOT GIVE STUDENTS THE BLANK SCANTRONS FROM THE COPY ROOM.

Creating the Key

  • Use a blank Scantron form to create your key.
  • To specify it is a key, bubble in the #5 box. If you have more the 50 questions, you will need to bubble in #5 on the back as well.
  • Select grading marks
    • 5 = provides score
    • 2 & 5 = provides score and verifies alphabetical
    • 2,3,& 5 = provides score and verifies numerical
  • Fill in the correct answers on the Scantron form.

Scoring the Exam

  • Remove cover and turn on the Scantron machine
  • Feed the exam key
  • f the exam has more than 50 questions, feed BOTH sides of the key before scoring students’ exams
  • Now score both sides of a student’s Scantron before moving on to the next student.
  • Scantron will provide a total raw score. If you want the total points to appear on the front side of the Scantron, run side 2 then side 1 (for both the key and the students’ exam forms)
  • If the Scantron machine cannot read a form, it will "beep." You will need to rerun the form.
  • ITEM ANALYSIS - once all exams are graded, you can run an item analysis to gain information as to the number of students who answered a particular question incorrectly.
  • If you turn off the Scantron machine before you are finished or before the item analysis is done, you will lose all your data (and need to rerun the key and/or all exams for item analysis)
  • Turn off Scantron machine and replace cover

Trouble Shooting

  • Form will not feed : straighten edges or erase any stray pencil lines in left margin

Advantages of Using Scantron

  • It is fast and convenient.
  • You always have access to the machine. It’s located next to the copier in the psych office.

Disadvantages of Using Scantron

  • Scantron cannot differentiate between wrong answers and multiple marks/incomplete erasures.
  • Scantron cannot handle multiple answers, so if the instructor wants "B or C" accepted as correct, you may have to manually score those items.
  • After you score the exam, you then have to enter the scores by hand into excel
  • It is simple for students to cheat. If you return their Scantron forms to them, they can erase the incorrect answer and claim that it was marked wrong due to multiple marks.

Solutions: Do not return their forms, do not allow regrading of exams after the forms are returned, or make copies of the students' forms before returning them.
