Initial Meeting

TA Issues to Discuss at Initial Meeting with Instructor

Note: Some of these you will probably want to discuss at your first meeting with the instructor; other issues you’ll want to bring up again prior to exam time.

  1. General Responsibilities
    • Would you like me to attend lectures? Read the assigned chapters?
    • Will you and I have regular meetings during the quarter?
    • Will I be giving lectures to the class? If so, will I be responsible for organizing the content of the lecture?
    • When are your office hours going to be? Are there particular times that I should or shouldn’t hold mine?
    • How should I notify you in case of emergency (e.g., illness)?
    • Will I be receiving additional desk copies of the text and/or readers?
  2. Assignments and grading
    • Are there regular homework assignments that I will be grading?
    • Are there special projects that I will be organizing, overseeing, or grading (papers or research projects)?
    • Will I be responsible for keeping grade sheets during the quarter?
      • In what form would you like to receive grade information (e.g. Do you want it alphabetized, organized by score, and/or with frequency distributions or graphs?
      • When do you want the grade information: after the exams and/or at the end of the quarter?
    • Will grades be posted? (If so, a waiver is needed.) Also –how, when, and where should they be posted?
    • How should I deal with suspected cheating on exams, papers, etc.?
    • How do you handle students who request grade changes?
  3. Exams
    • What is the exam schedule (usually found in course syllabus)?
    • Will I have to help write questions for the exam? (find this one out early)
      • What types of questions will be used (e.g., multiple choice, essay, completion)?
      • What are your expectations regarding content? Difficulty?
      • When should the exams/questions be ready?
    • What are my responsibilities regarding preparing, proofing and giving the exam?
      • How many versions of the exam do you use (e.g., Exam A, Exam B, ...)?
      • Who will review the exam items before copying?
      • When will you give me the final version of the exam and when do the copies need to be ready?
      • Any special instructions regarding printing, copying, and collating?
      • Will students be required to bring Scantrons, Parscore forms, Blue Books?
      • How many proctors will there be?
    • What are my responsibilities regarding grading the exam? When do you want the grading done?
    • What is your policy regarding make-up exams?
    • Do I need to schedule an exam overflow room? Or a room for DSP students?
    • Are graded exams returned to students? Are they recycled?
  4. Discussion Sections and Review Sessions
    • Will I be leading discussion sections? Is there a set curriculum, or am I responsible for content?
    • Will I be giving review sessions?
      • What should the structure be? When should it be given? What size room should I reserve?

Are there any other expectations you have regarding my responsibilities?
