Graduate Studies: Financial Support & Housing

Financial Support

The Department of Psychology makes every effort to financially support qualified graduate students. We have been able to offer total packages that are competitive with other major institutions. Students who are considered for admission to the Ph.D. program are simultaneously considered for all forms of campus based support. The Department is typically successful in providing five years of financial support to all students admitted to the Ph.D. program.

Nine-month teaching assistantships and graduate student research assistantships are the most common forms of support for students in the Psychology Department. Both assistantships provide a monthly salary, payment of in-state fees, and health insurance benefits. A research assistantship at 35% time or more will also pay nonresident tuition.

Incoming students may receive some combination of an assistantship, fee fellowship, and fellowship stipends. Qualified incoming students are considered for several different types of campus-based fellowships such as the Chancellor's Fellowship, the Regents Special Fellowship, the Eugene Cota-Robles Fellowship, and the Doctoral Scholars Fellowship. These fellowships combine stipend years and employment for a support package of five years.

Applicants are encouraged to apply for fellowships offered by outside agencies such as the American Psychological Association, the Ford Foundation, the National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Public Health Service. The dates and procedures for applying for these fellowships should be obtained by students early in their senior year from their own campus advisor.

Continuing graduate students are eligible to apply for campus fellowships to supplement their teaching or research assistantship income. These include the Graduate Research Mentorship Program, the General Affiliates Dissertation Fellowships, and the President's Dissertation Year Fellowships.

Graduate Student Housing

Living accommodations are available in university and privately owned residence halls, single and family student apartments, and privately owned apartments, duplexes, rooms, and houses in the neighboring communities. Since there are often waiting lists for university-owned housing, apply early. You need not wait for acceptance to graduate school before applying for housing.
