1970

Don Burns 1970 I worked from 1970-1997 at Camarillo State Hospital as a Program Director and Community Liaison. I transferred to Atascadero State Hospital and worked as a Staff Programmer Analyst (database software) until December, 2004. I am semi-retired now and still work a few days a month as a Staff Programmer Analyst. I moved to Ventura when I graduated in 1970 and still love living here by the beach. burns_donald@sbcglobal.net.

Gayle (Ginthner) Kehrli 1970 I obtained a Masters degree from San Diego State in Counseling and Guidance, and have been working as a School Psychologist for the past 25 odd years. I married a fellow UCSB graduate and have two children who also graduated from UCSB (my son just last year). I suppose we are all Gauchos. When my daughter entered in 1996, Dr. Sherman — with whom I'd done a project as an undergraduate — served on the orientation panel. As a school psychologist, I certainly used much of my early training. My specialty is behavioral analysis as well as diagnostics of disabilities in school age children. As I am nearing retirement age, I elected this year to be a part-time school counselor, assisting students to go to the university.

Saeed (Heidar) Modaresi 1970 lived on 6th floor of San Miguel with Randy Umland, Dan Thistlewait, Herb Weingart, Lester Powell, Fred Buddinger, and Bill Greenwalt. International student from Iran; girlfriend was Gayle Eipper. Received PHD in experimental psychology from UCR, then 15 years later went back and got a PhD in clinical psychology from U of South Carolina. Is now a clinical psychologist and university professor in South Carolina, married to Ingrid, and has two daughters, Anahita and Shirin, and two grandchildren, Cyrus and Kai. modaresih@winthrop.edu.

Jim West 1970 M. Ed. Counseling Psych 1973. Jim was employed as a high school instructor, counselor and football coach from 1971 until 1989 starting at Ventura High then moving to Nordhoff High in Ojai and then to Mariposa County High. In 1989 he took a position as a counselor at Allan Hancock College (AHC) in Santa Maria, CA. In 1991 he was selected as the first Chair for the Counseling Department at AHC. In June of 1994 he became Dean, Counseling and Matriculation. He served in that capacity until he retired in December of 2006. He continued as the instructor for the college's student government program through the fall semester, 2008. He is married to Susie West, a 1971 UCSB psychology department graduate. Paul Kimoto 1971 I went to work for DHL Worldwide Express (unable to find gainful employment in the field of psychology). In 1983 I opened my own business as a Customs Broker working for international importers. I married in 1979, divorced in 2000, raised two daughters. The older one (UCSD 1997) works for Organic Style magazine. The younger daughter is a UCSB sophomore, paying $1200 a month for an apartment in good old Isla Vista. My old apartments are still there looking exactly the same as they did 30 years ago. I'm currently a consultant for international importers and serve on the Board of Directors for the Hillblom Foundation which provides grants & fellowships in the fields of diabetes and aging research. The foundation recently provided funding for a new research building at UCLA.

Michael Levine 1971 *1979 is Samuel B. Cummings Jr. Professor of Psychology at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. He currently teaches courses in abnormal psychology, theories of personality, research methods in personality, introductory psychology, and a seminar on eating disorders. His scholarship addresses the links between eating problems and prevention, developmental psychology, and community psychology. A Fellow of the Academy for Eating Disorders, he has published many articles and chapters on these topics and given numerous talks at professional meetings both nationally and internationally. Levine is co-editor of two books and the author of two curriculum guides and two books. The most recent book with long-time Kenyon colleague and collaborator Dr. Linda Smolak is Levine and Smolak's The Prevention of Eating Problems and Eating Disorders: Theory, Research, and Practice (Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 2006). Next year he will be retiring after 33 years at Kenyon.

Doug McCormick 1971 I lived in Canalino Hall my freshman year and did more surfing that year than any year before or since. In my sophomore year I moved to San Raphael which was brand new. I saw the Bank of America burn twice and watched the riots and the marines landing on the bluffs. They told our RA that they were lost and stopped to ask for directions. In 1983 I received my Masters and PhD in Quantitative Psychology from USC. Shortly before I graduated, I was offered a job at AT&T and for eighteen years I developed aptitude and knowledge tests for technical jobs at AT&T. In 2001 I retired, sold my house in New Jersey and moved to Honolulu. I own a small condo next to Diamond Head and if all goes well I will soon break my freshman record for most days surfed in one year. I am single. I do a lot of surfing. Last year I bought a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle from a dealer in New Jersey and rode across the country to Los Angeles, stopping at the homes of friends and several national parks along the way.

Joe Newman 1971 I received a MS in Counseling from Univ. of Arizona 1979 and was a rehab counselor and hospital administrator for Sharp Hospital in San Diego until 1984. Moved into commercial real estate 21 years ago and am now Managing Director for CB Richard Ellis in San Diego — the world's largest commercial real estate services company. I manage a brokerage Downtown and the Asset Management Division in SD. My wife Mary and I live in Scripps Ranch (SD). We have 2 daughters, one (Mackenzie) married in San Luis Obispo, one (Marissa) in her Sophomore year at UCSB.

Susan (Susie Lukes) West 1971 After working for about two years at Goleta Elementary School as an instructional specialist, Susie took a job teaching third grade at Monica Ross, a private school in Ojai, Ca. While there she completed her elementary teaching credential and obtained a position as a sixth grade instructor at Woodland School in Mariposa California . In 1989, she moved with her husband Jim to Santa Maria , CA where she obtained a position teaching sixth grade for the Orcutt Union School District . She continues to teach at May Grisham Elementary School . Susie has two children: Rusty (29) and Joe (27).

Susan Davis 1972 After graduation, I worked for a year in Special Education programs, received a MS in Counseling with a Pupil Personnel Credential for School Psychology from CSU Hayward in 1975, and have been a School Psychologist ever since. I currently work part time for San Ramon Valley USD, providing psychological services (assessment, counseling, consultation) for one elementary school and coordinating a school-based, early intervention mental health project for 5 elementary schools. Greg (also a UCSB alum, we married when I was a senior) and I have two daughters, one a UCSC sophomore (majoring in Psychology!!) and the second a high school senior. As an "empty nester" next year, I plan to pursue a certification in School Neuropsychology, a long time interest of mine. Life is full, but good!

Jon (Jonathan) Eymann 1972 married Juliette Griffing 1972 in their senior year and still enjoys her company, living together in Camarillo. Their 3 grown sons all still live in Goleta and all graduated from UCSB. Jon and Julie were ordained as Christian ministers in 1974 and began a non-denominational charismatic protestant church in Goleta, which they continue to pastor. Jon earned an MA in clinical psychology in 2003 and has become licensed as a marriage and family therapist, with a private practice in Goleta in addition to his role as practitioner and clinic manager for Santa Barbara County Mental Health's adult outpatient clinic.

Candace (Weisshart) Kamm 1972 is Director of Research at FX Palo Alto Laboratory, a small information technology research lab. After earning a MA in Audiology at CSULA, I worked at UCLA School of Medicine for 8 years while completing a UCLA Ph.D. degree in Cognitive Psychology. In 1982, I joined Bell Laboratories in New Jersey, working on speech recognition and synthesis technologies, and later focusing on user interfaces to voice-enabled telephone services. In 1984, I joined the Speech Recognition Applications Research Group at Bellcore (now Telcordia Technologies). I returned to AT&T Bell Labs in 1995, and was a department head at AT&T Labs - Research until moving back to California in 2002. I am a member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society and ACM.

Susan LaCava 1972 I am a lawyer in Madison, Wisconsin specializing in plaintiff's class actions. Most of my cases are antitrust actions alleging price fixing conspiracies, but I also represent defrauded investors and consumers. My most recent case is against the alcoholic beverage industry alleging that its members have deliberately targeted minors in their advertising. sl@susanlacava.com.

Steven Ross *1972 is in private practice as a clinical psychologist in San Ramon, CA. In addition, he has been teaching a variety of psychology classes at California State University East Bay in the undergraduate and graduate departments.

Michael Salerno 1972 I attended graduate school in Law and Society at UC Davis (1972-73), was a consultant to the California State Senate (1973-76), and returned to law school at Davis (1976-79-- served on the UC Board of Regents 1977-78). I married Kathleen Turney (1979) and now have two children (Gian 1985, Giuliana 1997). After graduation, I commenced work for the Legislative Counsel. I taught at the UC Davis School of Law (1993-96), was a Fulbright Scholar in Italy (1995), and started teaching at UC Hastings in 1999. I now teach courses and supervise a legislation clinic. I have published articles concerning the legislative process, regulating the financial interests of public officials, influencing legislation, amending constitutions in the US, and am coauthor of Legal, Legislative, and Rule Drafting in Plain English (West 2005).

John N. Gardi 1973 , Ph.D. from UCSF 1978, D. ABNM, F. ASNM, CCC-A. NIH post doctoral fellow 1978-1980; UCSF Dept. of Otolaryngology Assistant Prof. 1980-1987. Since 1988 he has served as Chariman and CEO of Evoked Potential Associates, Inc., a small private medical company in Northern California that provides intraoperative neuromonitoring services to patients undergoing difficult surgical procedures that place nervous system tissue at risk during surgery (e.g., brain tumors, spinal cord deformity corrective surgeries, brain aneurysm coiling or clipping procedures, etc). They physically go into the OR and stimulate and record from nervous system tissue in such patients receiving surgical procedures in hospitals throughout the greater Bay Area. gardi@cnsiom.com

Judith Lee-Squire 1973 also received an elementary teacher credential from UCSB in 1975; LH & SH teaching credentials, 1977 and M.S. Educational Psychologist from Cal State Hayward, 1982; M.S. School Psychology San Jose State, 198. She is a Licensed Educational Psychologist and currently lead psychologist, Santa Clara Unified School District.

Robert Most 1973 got a doctorate in Cognitive Psychology from Wayne State University in Detroit. For 10 years was VP of R&D for Consulting Psychologists Press (now CPP, Inc.) and in 1994 started Mind Garden, Inc. in Menlo Park, CA. Mind Garden publishes psychological assessments instruments and provides tools for psychological assessment. bobmost@msn.com

Bruce Shapiro 1973 in Psychology and Zoology completed MS in Biology at the University of Nevada, medical degree at University of Nevada School of Medicine, residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Yale New Haven Hospital, fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Yale University, and Ph.D. at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He is sub-specialty board certified in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. He established and is the director the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. He founded and is Medical and Laboratory director at The Fertility Center of Las Vegas.

Keith Witt 1973 received an MA in Counseling Psych in 1975 and Ph.D. from the Fielding Institute is a licensed psychologist and MFT. After cofounding the Human Relations Center and Family Education and Counseling Center, he entered private practice where he has conducted over 50,000 therapy sessions. He is a professor at the Santa Barbara Graduate Institute, has published four books (Waking Up, Sessions, The Gift of Shame, and The Attuned Family), and lectures on integral psychology, attunement, interpersonal neurobiology, developmentally focused psychotherapy, the gift of shame, and erotic polarity. His article Developmental Engagement Field Theory will appear this year in The Journal of Integral Theory and Practice. He is happily married to Becky Witt with two grown children, Ethan and Zoe.

Marc Axelrod 1974 I got an MA in Occupational and Environmental Health from CSUN and work in industrial hygiene and safety for Boeing in Anaheim. My psychology degree from UCSB was a great foundation for my career — I still remember learning about Mazlow's 'need hierarchy' as Safety was right there on the bottom after physiological needs - I apply this everyday. I am married - 23 years - to another former UCSB student Elizabeth Gross, a pharmacist. We have three children - Julia, a sophomore SFSU, Jack, a freshman at UCSC, and Joseph, a sophomore at Beverly Hills High School. I love baseball - I am immediate past president of our local Little League and I was recently on a National Championship 'over 48' team.

Richard Allan Gardner 1974 Greatest accomplishment: Still married to my first wife. Owner of 2 management companies that specialize in Homeowners Associations. Avid horseman, skier, and golfer. Two children, one son who works with me and one married daughter employed as a food scientist. No grandchildren yet, maybe in a couple of years. We have lived in Truckee, CA for the past 26 years.

Kathleen (Budke) Gates 1974 Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, University of Vermont, 1980. Currently in practice at 644 East Thompson Blvd., Ventura, CA 93001. Practicing full-time in private practice since 1982. Practice is limited to adults. Certified as a Psychoanalyst by the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, now the New Center for Psychoanalysis in 1999. Husband is Robert Gates. Our daughter, Sarah Gates is graduating from UCSB in Anthropology in June, 2007.

Jan Grossman 1974 thought he had graduated in 1973 as he boarded an Icelandic Airlines flight out of JFK to spend a few months in the fall and early winter bumming around the continent, only to find that he was 2 classes and 4 units short of graduation. A quick stint at UCLA summer school made the world right. Subsequently went on to law school in L.A.; member State Bar of CA since 1981; member State Bar of Arizona since 1996; currently residing with wife, Gayle (married 1983), and practicing law, in Scottsdale, AZ. Sire of boy-girl twins, Bryan and Erica, since June 4th, 1986; and, of their younger sister, Mallory, since June 4th, 1987; (yes, you read that correctly). Fred Holmes 1974 Even before graduating I took a position with SB County Probation, working in the local Juvenile Hall. The next 10 years included positions as Juvenile Probation officer in San Luis Obispo County, Executive Director of a non-profit shelter care program for adolescents, and a couple of years as a cross-country truck driver. The last two decades I've been self-employed in various marketing endeavors, giving me the time and money to be more involved with my children. Although never married, I have been blessed with two wonderful sons, now 25 and 22. As my younger son became a very young single father three years ago, I had the opportunity to live with him and my grandson for much of my grandson's life. Today, I travel to Reno every other week from my home in Ventura to visit with my grandson (check out the cutest and smartest grandbaby in the world at www.fredholmes.com). I've taken a break from business to pursue real estate investment in the Reno area.

Joanne Kay Jordan 1974 Went to CSU Long Beach to earn two teaching credentials in special education. Worked with Severely Handicapped students for 10 years and then went to Learning Handicapped, Resource level, where I am today. I am teaching in the Chaffey High School District in California where I have been for 29 years and have a Master's from Cal Poly, Pomona and I have 4 teaching credentials and two vocational certificates. Married, with two children, ages 21 and 17, and two step children ages 36 and 32, one grandson age 10. I still get to Santa Barbara once in a while for a weekend. I just moved to Corona, CA.

Ruth Wilson 1974 has been in private practice as an MFT since getting her MA in counseling psychology in l976. For thirteen years she had the Christian Emotional Therapy Center next to San Francisco Hospital where she helped train several therapists. We had many dynamic relationship groups. For the past 15 years she has been actively practicing in her home. She is slowing down now but still counsels in the Christian community as well as a few clients and one group at home. She has written three books, The Gift of Anger, The Gift of Hurt, and The Gift of Love. She has been married to Jack for 55 years, has five married children and 14 grandchildren!

Joyce Dudley 1975 UCSB was the 5th college I attended in 3 years. I had a great time everywhere but ended up graduating with Honors in paradise. From UCSB I went on to earn a MA, MEd, JD. I am now a Sr. DDA in Santa Barbara County. I am also an author of a crime novel Justice Served, a statewide lecturer, and law school professor. Most importantly, I am happily married to a hydogeologist and we have 4 sons ages 25-17 - thankfully they all still live in town - one is a Senior at UCSB - GO GAUCHOS!! I find I use many experiences I had a UCSB (including the knowledge I gained in class) in my every day life both professionally and personally.

Darlene Fogel 1975 I received my MA in Art Therapy from Goddard College, and am a certified clinical hypnotherapist. I'm semi-retired (at least for now) so I can pursue my desire to learn graphic arts on the computer (I was originally an art major at UCSB). I live on 23 acres in a wooded rural area near Spokane, WA. My husband and I built our own house, and I hope to add an art studio and pool before I get too old. I have two sons, one still at home, soon to move out (!).

Linda Kropp 1975 attended Santa Barbara College of Law from 1981-84, and has been practicing public interest law in the area since then. From 1986-1989, she was staff attorney with the Legal Aid Foundation, where she also earned a certificate in mediation from the State of California. Since 1989, she has been working at the Environmental Defense Center, representing environmental and community organizations throughout Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo Counties. She currently teaches Environmental Law at UCSB, and occasionally at SB College of Law. She was named a Conservation Champion by U.S. Senator Boxer in 2005.

Mary McGrath 1975 spent about 20 years in the ad sales business before transitioning full-time into her true passions of writing, photography, and music. As a photojournalist, she has had work appear in many publications, including Newsweek and The Wall St. Journal. Her career change has taken her into travel writing, where she contributes to such publications as Copley Newspapers, Rangefinder Magazine and many others. Beyond writing, she also spends time performing as a jazz vocalist throughout Los Angeles. Recently, she was profiled in the Wall St. Journal regarding her creative efforts. George E. Murphy 1975 I obtained my J.D. from Golden Gate University in 1979 and moved to Sacramento where I served as Research Attorney for the State Court of Appeal. In 1982 I was hired by a Sacramento firm to start their appellate department. In 1994 I founded Farmer & Murphy with another UCSB alumnus--Craig Farmer. We now have 11 attorneys, specializing in civil appeals. I have been involved in hundreds of appellate cases in California including the Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. I have over 40 published decisions. What I learned in Psychology at UCSB has made me a much better lawyer in many ways. I am married and have three children. Lauren, 17, wants to go to UCSB and major in Psychology. Mike, 16, is not sure where he wants to got to college. Shane is 13 and college is not even on the radar screen. I have taken them by the UCSB campus. It has changed significantly since I went there, but I think I could still find my way around. I am waiting for UCSB to launch a law school -- it would be great to be back on campus again. I have missed it all these years.

Van Riley 1975 My wife, Mary, also graduated UCSB in 1976. After working in a residential treatment center for emotionally disturbed children, I began a teacher credentialing program at UCLA. After teaching math and science, I completed an MA in Education Administration from SDSU. In Encinitas, I worked up the administrative ranks from principal through assistant superintendent. In 1995, I obtained my first superintendent position in Carpinteria where I completed my PhD from UCSB in Education Leadership in 1999. I assumed superintendent positions in Ojai Unified followed by Huntington Beach Union High School District. I have thoroughly enjoyed every position I have held in public education. Providing avenues for young people to better their lives has been a rewarding career for me. Proud parents of two wonderful children, Van and wife Mary (Class of 1976) are living in Long Beach and spend part of their time in their home in Montecito. A true Gaucho family, daughter Sahara received her PhD in Communications in 2007 and is a professor at Cornell University. Son Matthew received his MA in Environmental Science and is CEO of Infinity Wind, a Santa Barbara company located on upper State Street. Sahara has two daughters, Isabella and Charlotte who, according to Van and Mary, are the best grandchildren anywhere! Van's email is vriley@hbuhsd.org.

Peter Benjamin 1976 After working for Dr. Jacobs, Peter started several outdoor chains and companies: Granite Stairway Mountaineering in 1971; Granite Wholesale in 1974; and Black Ice in 1978. In 1984 he moved to Hong Kong and then Japan where he founded Odyssey Japan, manufacturing and sourcing products for the Japanese outdoor markets. In 1988 on New Year's Eve he married Miyuki Nakamura in SB and they'll celebrate their 20th anniversary this year. In 1991 he sold Odyssey and became COO for The North Face, Inc. In 1999 he joined Deckers Outdoor first as COO and then President. Since 1993 he's also owned Pacific Resources, a brand, sales, and sourcing agency for the Japanese and Asian markets. Miyuki and Peter currently split their time between Sausalito and Tokyo, getting to SB a few times a year to see his mother and sisters.

Michael Doughton 1976 Mike is happily employed as Senior Staff Counsel for the California Energy Commission in Sacramento. On a personal note, his 6th CD of original music was released in May 2008, entitled "Orange Morning."

Lisa Horelick 1976 My junior and senior year at UCSB was certainly the pivotal point for me in realizing that my passion was psychology. Excellent professors, courses and classmates contributed to the excitement of learning about myself and others in a new and deep way. I received a masters in School Psychology and then a doctorate in Clinical Psychology (in New York, at Yeshiva University). As I began working in the field I felt the desire to learn more about psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, and graduated from the 4 year program at Adelphi University (NY). I have now been in private practice for over 20 years, working with adolescents, adults and couples. I am on faculty at a psychoanalytic institute (SIPP) where I teach, supervise, and enjoy the stimulation of working with fine clinicians and good friends. As I enter a more "senior" level of involvement in this profession, I particularly enjoy the opportunity to give back, by training new candidates in the field.

Melanie Ito 1976 and Charles (aka Bud) Wilkinson, 1976 We married in 1973 while psych grad students. In 1976, Melanie entered the UC Berkeley graduate program in genetic counseling, and Charles began a post-doctoral fellowship in physiology at UC San Francisco. In 1978, Melanie took a genetic counseling position at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, while Charles stayed in San Francisco. Melanie returned to take a counseling job at UCSF later that year. In 1980, Charles took off for another post-doc -- in endocrinology -- at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. Yes, Melanie stayed in San Francisco. For most of two years we saw each other as often as possible on weekends on one coast or another. Then Melanie took a counseling position at the University of Utah. In1982, Melanie began work at the University of Washington, and Charles found a research position at the Seattle VA Medical Center with an academic appointment in psychiatry at UW. Together again -- but not for long. Melanie decided to try medical school and was accepted at UW in 1984. In 1988, she left for a residency in pediatrics at UCSF and San Francisco General Hospital. (Yes, Charles stayed in Washington -- commuting yet again.) In 1991, Melanie returned to Seattle, first to a research fellowship at UW before settling into a position with the Seattle/King County Public Health Department as a primary care pediatrician. And, with a series of loving cats, they lived happily (together) ever after.

Ann Lowell Leatherbury 1976 I loved going to UCSB but the in the very difficult job market of the mid 70's moved to LA where my husband found work. I had past retail experience so was hired by Bullocks (Federated) department stores (now Macys), became a department manager, and worked for them for about three years. I then moved to Robinsons and became a shoe buyer. Over the years I have sold just about everything. In 1995 I was asked to sit on the board of the Henry L. Guenther Foundation. We review grants and distribute money to worthy hospitals, research facilities, and philanthropies in the Greater LA area. I have been married to Chuck for 37 years and have two great daughters. Because there used to be dog shows on the UCSB campus, I have showed and trained Golden Retrievers since college, just recently switching breeds to Havanese.

Paula (Lapinski) Loehr 1976 After graduation I became a Registered Nurse. My nursing career has spanned hospital-based and community health clinic/field positions including orthopedic, pediatric and emergency specialties, school and college health assignments, as well as instruction of nursing students. Since 1996, I've worked as a home-based freelance writer. My articles about health, family travel and nature have been published in several national and regional magazines such as Child, Family Circle and Highways. Currently produces monthly travel articles for Camp Club USA and CyberSam online, as well as a quarterly column for Radius Magazine - a print publication written by healthcare professionals. I am an adjunct faculty member for Florida Hospital College of Health Science's online bachelors' degree programs for nurses and radiologic technologists. Fortunately, I married Dennis Loehr (1979 UCSB Chemistry Ph.D.) 29 years ago and we have three sons. Andrea Berman Matis 1976 received an MA in Movement Therapy at Immaculate Heart College and a Certificate of Dance from the Laban Centre at the University of London. She has been a professional dancer, mime, teacher and choreographer for the past 30 years. Her diagnosis of Scleroderma didn't stop her from founding the Universal Scleroderma Foundation and working for the Arthritis Foundation and the Scleroderma Research Foundation. Andrea has written a book, Serenaid, about how her illness led to the adoption of her first child and a relationship with his birth mother. Joel Moskowitz 1976 has been Director of the Center for Family and Community Health, a CDC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research, in the School of Public Health at UC Berkeley since 1993. He has conducted research on alcohol, tobacco and other drug use prevention, tobacco control policy, smoking cessation, breast and cervical cancer screening, HIV/AIDS and innovative behavioral surveillance methods.

Neil Resnick 1976 is Executive Vice President / National Director / Transaction Services, in the West Los Angeles office of Grubb & Ellis. Neil started his career in commercial real estate in 1985. In 2004, he was promoted to Executive Vice President, Managing Director at Grubb & Ellis. In this role he was responsible for two consecutive years of unprecedented growth. In 2007 Neil re-joined the ranks of transaction professionals and now focuses on the representation of office users with their renewal and relocation needs. Judith (Malmin) Weber 1976 earned an MBA in Marketing from UMass Amherst; has operated a market research consulting business (Weber Associates) in the Bay area for 30 years. Larry "Hy" Doyle 1977 I received an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from UCLA in 2004. I've been a Learning Skills Counselor in the School of Medicine at UCI, U. Nevada, UC Davis, U. Washington, and UCLA. I've designed educational computer software and served as Assistant Head of Math and Computers at the Basic University Education Center of the United Arab Emirates University. I've worked extensively in programs (like Job Corps, Upward Bound, McNair Scholars, MESA, Health Careers Opportunity Programs, and Hispanic Centers of Excellence) to help disadvantaged students to enter medical careers or to serve in medically underserved areas. I am currently Assistant Dean for Student Affairs for the Drew/UCLA Medical Education Program, serve on the faculty of both the UCLA School of Medicine and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, and am Assistant Director for the UCLA/Drew Center of Excellence.

Mindy Grout Flanagan 1977 just relocated back home to La Jolla, CA from Danville, CA. She launched her career in real estate in the East Bay area and just recently joined Prudential California Realty in La Jolla. Prior to real estate, she was a career coach and corporate trainer. So now instead of helping people find their dream job, she helps them find their dream home!

Stephen Newman 1977 doubled majored in Biology. Married Sarah Jewel (UCSB 1977 Biology). We have two boys: Ben, 21, attending University of San Francisco, and Sam, 16. We live in Winters, CA, a small agricultural area just west of UC Davis. Stephen is a family physician (MD George Washington University, 1981 and UCSF Family Practice Residency 1984), and Sarah (MPH Berkeley 1984) directs marketing and business development for NorthBay Healthcare in Fairfield CA. We still miss and love to look at old photos of our little house at 6732 Del Playa, and were saddened to read of Harry Carlisle's death in your last issue.

Dana (Rosenthal) Thurm 1977 I got a UCSB Teaching Credential from UCSB 1978 and a Masters in the Psychology of Child Development from the College of the Center for Early Education. I married my college sweetheart and moved to Los Angeles, where I worked at a private elementary school. Seven years and one child later... I divorced and moved back to my home town of San Diego, where I am happily living on the beach and teaching first grade in the Encinitas Union School District. Maria Antonini 1978 received a PHD in Political Science from UCSB after spending a year at San Francisco State University in a MA program in the Interdisciplinary Humanities. Has been teaching in the Liberal Studies Program at New York University, at the main campus in Greenwich Village, since 1992. Charles DeCarli 1978 is happily married with two children finishing college and the third entering high-school. He spent 20 years on the East Coast getting his MD, completing medical training and doing research at the National Institutes of Health. He returned to California with the family in 2000. He is Professor of Neurology at UC Davis and directs the Alzheimer's Disease Center and the Imaging of Dementia and Aging Laboratory. His research interests focus on studying factors related to cognitive decline associated with aging, vascular and Alzheimer's disease. Marilynn (Payne) Gottlieb 1978 After graduating, I continued my schooling - getting my pilot's license, then an AA degree in Medical Photography. I worked as a medical photographer for over five years, earning the professional certification, until becoming an at-home mom. In my free time, I took up creative writing, which allowed me to return to Santa Barbara to attend the Santa Barbara Writer's Conference. A few years ago, I rejoined the work force as a researcher for a commercial real estate appraiser, where I find my scientific and statistical background is helpful. James Morgan 1978 I am the Executive Director of the Southwest Family YMCA in Temecula, California (I moved from Santa Ynez wine country to Temecula wine country). I have been in YMCA work for 20 years, and am now primarily a fund raiser. I have raised a few million dollars in the past year to build a new YMCA locally. I started my Master's Degree in German in West Berlin, and finished in Southern California with a Master of Arts Degree in Organizational Management.

Terri L. Needels 1978 earned an MA in Counseling Psych at the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Duke University. Living in Hawaii, she worked as a Psychologist for a Medical Clinic, began private practice, then served as Dean of the American School of Professional Psychology for 9 years. She is now in private practice full-time, consulting with private schools, the Family Court, and the Social Security Disability organization. Terri served as President of the Hawaii Psychological Association, chaired the Legislative Committee, co-chaired the Hawaii Licensing Board for 8 years, and was a member of APA's Ethics Committee for 2 years. She continues to surf, play beach volleyball and compete on a master's tennis team. She is married and has a 15 year-old daughter and a 30 year-old step-son.

Burt Romothsky 1978 After a year off I completed a Masters in Social Welfare at Berkeley in 1981, then worked for Ventura and Santa Barbara counties providing clinical and managerial services to both adults and children. I am now employed here at UCSB Student Health as the Campus Social Worker providing assessment, linkage and support for students. I have been married for five years, and we enjoy traveling, biking, hiking, and living in Santa Barbara.

David A. Thomasco 1978 received an MA in Counseling Psychology from the Fielding Institute and became a licensed MFT in 1981, getting a Ph.D. in Clinical Hypnotherapy in 1990 from the American Institute of Hypnotherapy. In private practice in Santa Barbara since 1981, he currently maintains a small practice and does forensic psychology work in alcohol, drug, and other legal issues. He has 4 children, 18-26 years, and has been married to Carole for over 22 years. They own the Medicine Shoppe Uptown Pharmacy, 3 "Unique Tan" tanning salons, and the "Art Int'l" art gallery in SB. They also own Desert Breeze Properties in La Quinta CA although they are winding that down due to the economy. David still loves to ski, fish, hunt, dance, play racquet ball, and travel.

Tara Framer 1979 moved to NYC and started a PhD in Clinical Psychology but decided instead to pursue a career in graphic design and is now Creative Director in her own company, Tara Framer Design, developing identity programs, promotions, trade shows, Web sites, magazine editorials, packaging, and presentations. Clients include ConEdison Solutions, Westchester Children's Association, Laurie M. Tisch Illumination, Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy, National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship, and The Children's Aid Society. She's held senior positions at Scholastic, Reader's Digest, MacMillan-McGraw Hill Publishing, and Chase Bank and taught at The New School, School of Visual Arts, and Westchester Community College.
